About
The Senior Companion Program provides grants to organizations with a dual purpose: to engage persons 55 years and older, particularly those with limited incomes, in volunteer service to meet critical community needs; and to provide a high-quality experience that will enrich the lives of the volunteers. The AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers in this program provide supportive, individualized services to help older adults with special needs maintain their dignity and independence.

AmeriCorps Seniors Volunteers
Grantees recruit individuals for this program who are 55 years and older
Volunteers for this program serve as friends and companions to older neighbors, making sure they can live in their own homes for as long as possible.
Volunteers are eligible to receive a stipend for their volunteering if they meet income eligibility requirements.

The Senior Companion program focuses on providing assistance and friendship to older adults who have difficulty with daily living tasks, such as shopping or paying bills. Through this program, AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers keep seniors independent longer and provide respite to family caregivers. AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers themselves report better health and longevity having served their community.

We are adapting our AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program to provide our volunteers with virtual volunteer opportunities to continue to help children in schools, Headstarts, and at home. With this change, our volunteers need the devices and services to make them eligible to volunteer and serve those they care for, the young boys and girls in Central Florida who need help the most.  Your donations to the AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program will help us purchase tablets, internet service, web cames, and more for our volunteers. Our volunteers are 55+ and want to continue to be a benefit to Central Florida while helping children succeed. This not only helps the children but our volunteers as well as they suffer the most from social isolation in this difficult time.

We are also introducing our Gran Plan. Volunteers for Community Impact’s GRAN PLAN will provide local families with a Foster Grandparent Volunteer who can assist parents with their children’s education. While our FGP volunteers cannot replace parents or teachers, they can assist families by providing positive mentorship and educational assistance to students.

HOW IT WORKS:

Our FGP volunteers have served in schools providing in-classroom assistance to students who need a little extra attention to succeed academically. We have decided to provide these services directly to families by having our FGP volunteers utilize teleconference video solutions to assist your children on their school work.

Families apply to Volunteers for Community Impact to receive a Foster Grandparent Volunteer. Parents will meet with one of our coordinators who will ascertain your child’s needs and how our volunteers can assist you in providing for your child’s educational needs. Our RSVP volunteers are out volunteering the best they can. Some are handing out food at food banks, others are helping adults learn to read virtually and in so many other ways. While our volunteers start to gradually volunteer at food banks and other physical places, they are in need of personal protective equipment (PPE) to help them keep safe while volunteering. They need face masks/coverings, gloves, safety vests, sanitizers, and other items to protect them while they are volunteering. Your donations will help us provide them the necessities they need during our current pandemic. Thank you for supporting our volunteers!

Citizens’ Commission for Children has funded a new program for VCI that impacts underserved preschool children. The new program will be called OTTER (Older Teachers Teaching Young Readers) and will focus on introducing young children to the joy of reading.  OTTER volunteers will spend time reading to young pre-K students in the Orlando metro area to instill in them a lifetime love of reading and help build literacy skills that will help students succeed academically.

Sponsor a child and help them learn to read.
Your commitment for 12 monthly donations will help support children in the program by providing a book-of-the-month to them to read every month for a whole year! Help bring the magic of reading to pre-k children and grow into great future students!
