Help Empower Central Floridian Adults with the Gift of Reading
January 10, 2019 - June 30, 2019
Adult Literacy League
1 in 5 adults in Central Florida read at or below a 5th grade reading level. For these adults, everyday tasks such as reading labels, following street signs or filling out job applications can prove to be difficult.
Seeing the need for adult education in the community, The Adult Literacy League was created. Since its beginning in 1968, ALL has provided Adult Basic Education, English Language classes GED preparation, and one-one volunteering tutoring to over 2,500 students a year, and they could not have done it without the help of their volunteers.
Volunteers are needed in both a one-on-one tutoring position as well as teaching small group classes on a given topic:
- Volunteer tutors work one-on-one with students using nationally-accredited curricula to teach reading, writing, and English literacy skills. Tutors are expected to attend an orientation where expectations, requirements, and curriculum will be shared. This is a one hour a week commitment and can take place at a location convenient to you and the student.
- Small group teachers will choose from a list of predetermined classes in the following categories: Adult Basic Education, English Language, GED Prep, Computer Skills, and Citizenship. The locations of each class is predetermined, and they last for 12 weeks.
The Adult Literacy League provides the necessary training for each volunteer position. VCI’s part in this opportunity is to provide volunteers who are 55+ with a (free) comprehensive benefits package (inclusive of accident, personal liability and automobile liability insurance, a life Insurance benefit, free workshops and more) during the hours that you volunteer!
