This is the reference for anyone creating something with the VCI name on it - our team, our board, and the partners and vendors who help tell our story.

Typography

One family for headings, one for body copy - free, web- and print-ready, and legible at any age.

Headings - Nunito, bold/extrabold
Caring individuals building caring communities
Body copy - Nunito Sans
Since 1975, VCI has connected senior volunteers with children and neighbors who need them - proof that the best community work happens across generations, not within just one of them.

Web fallback stack: 'Nunito','Nunito Sans',-apple-system,sans-serif. Both are available free via Google Fonts for web and as desktop installs for print layout tools.

05 - Voice

Voice & tone

Warm. Intergenerational. Community-first. Dignified. We sound like a trusted neighbor - never corporate, never clinical.

Acronym rule

Spell out Volunteers for Community Impact on first reference in a section, then use VCI for the rest of that section - and spell it out again at the start of the next one. Same goes for our own programs: Foster Grandparent Program (FGP), Senior Companion Program (SCP), and OTTER.

General guardrails

No fixed banned-word list - the standing rule is simply nothing out of touch, nothing that could read as derogatory toward the seniors, children, or communities we serve.

Exception - anything identifying AmeriCorps, AmeriCorps Seniors, or its volunteers follows AmeriCorps's own required terminology instead. See the AmeriCorps section below.
06 - Imagery

Photography & imagery

Real people, real moments - never stock. This is the look, straight from our own library.

Senior Companion Program
  • Real people - actual VCI volunteers and the seniors and children they serve
  • Candid over posed - genuine interaction, not lineup-style group shots
  • Natural light - classrooms, homes, and community spaces as they really look
  • Diverse representation - across race, age, and program, reflecting our four counties

AmeriCorps Seniors co-branding

VCI is the local sponsoring agency for two AmeriCorps Seniors programs, FGP and SCP. Materials referencing AmeriCorps, AmeriCorps Seniors, or their volunteers follow AmeriCorps's own grant terms and brand rules - below is what that means in practice.

Which logo to use

Always the AmeriCorps Seniors logo, never the general AmeriCorps mark - FGP and SCP serve exclusively volunteers 55+. The name and icon always appear together, unmodified.

VCI and AmeriCorps Seniors combined logo lockup

Official combined lockup - VCI and AmeriCorps Seniors, same approximate height, separated by a vertical divider.

Required disclaimer

"This material is based upon work supported by AmeriCorps, the operating name of the Corporation for National and Community Service, under Grant No(s). [  ]. Opinions or points of view expressed in this document are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the official position of, or a position that is endorsed by, AmeriCorps or [the relevant AmeriCorps program]."

Grant number is filled in by staff, per document.

Required notice - federal funding

Currently missing from VCI's website and social channels. Per the Consolidated Appropriations Act, the phrase "Produced and published at U.S. taxpayer expense" must appear on all externally published, advertising, or educational materials - 8pt italic, positioned 0.125"–0.25" from the bottom of the page, aligned left, right, or center. Not required on internal staff documents.

Terminology

Do sayDon't say
AmeriCorps VolunteerWorker
"AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Volunteer""Foster Grandparent"
"AmeriCorps Seniors Senior Companion Volunteer""Senior Companion"
Selected to / Serve asHired to / Work as

AmeriCorps is always written as one capitalized word, never abbreviated, and always referenced before the program name.

08 - Separate compliance

OTTER - Orange County compliance

OTTER (Older Teachers Teaching Young Readers) is a VCI-run literacy program funded by Orange County - specifically the Orange County Citizens' Commission for Children. It is not an AmeriCorps program.

None of the AmeriCorps requirements above apply to OTTER materials as a program - no AmeriCorps disclaimer, no AmeriCorps logo. The one exception: when a specific FGP volunteer serving within OTTER is identified as an AmeriCorps Seniors volunteer, AmeriCorps's naming rule still applies to that person's title - not to OTTER itself.

Required funder acknowledgment

OTTER's webpage and all printed materials produced for the program must carry this language, alongside the Citizens' Commission for Children's logo:

Orange County Citizens' Commission for Children logo

"This program is funded in whole or in part by Orange County Citizens' Commission for Children."

Note: the file on hand is low-resolution (187×270px) - fine for web and normal print credit lines, but likely too small for large-format print. Ask the Commission for a higher-res or vector version if OTTER ever needs it larger.

09 - In practice

Example applications

This section grows as formal templates are built. For now, it documents the standard already set by real materials.

Flyers & social graphics

Real photo(s) of volunteers and participants, the VCI logo, program name, and a clear call to action - the existing FGP, SCP, and OTTER templates already in use are the working model.

Co-branded pieces

AmeriCorps Seniors logo + VCI logo in the vertical-divider lockup shown above, plus the required disclaimer where applicable.

Letterhead

Full-color logo centered at top, Board of Directors listed below it, and the signature green wave across the bottom with contact information - see the companion letterhead file.
