Friends with Pens

(In association with Ready Reader/Ready Writers and Amigos with Pens)

We are proud to announce that we are one of 19 nonprofits to receive a 2023 Disney Grant to help fund this new collaborative volunteer opportunity between our AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP program and Foster Grandparents Programs, and our OTTER Program, to benefit local schools and students, which will create lasting positive impacts for our community.

We are excited to introduce to you a new pen pal program between students (3rd to 5th graders) and senior citizens, called Friends with Pens. The goals of the program are:

1. We want to improve children’s skills in reading and writing and
2. We want to address senior isolation. We hope that by facilitating an intergenerational pen pal program we can achieve both goals.

This program will also incorporate a literacy component into the pen pal program, called Ready Readers/Ready Writers, to further improve the literacy of elementary school students including ESOL learners. Grant funds will be used to make books available to the students and volunteers that can become the topic of the writings.
