What is a Donor Advised Fund?
A Donor Advised Fund (DAF) is like a charitable savings account: you contribute assets, receive an immediate tax deduction, then recommend grants to nonprofits like VCI whenever you're ready, on your own schedule.
You transfer cash, stock, or other assets to your DAF account and receive an immediate charitable tax deduction before you've even decided which nonprofits to support.
Your donated assets are invested inside your DAF and grow tax-free, potentially increasing the total amount available to grant to charity over time.
When you're ready, you log in to your DAF portal and recommend a grant to VCI or any qualified 501(c)(3) charity. It takes just a few minutes.
DAFs are held at sponsoring organizations like Fidelity Charitable, Vanguard Charitable, Schwab Charitable, National Philanthropic Trust, or your local community foundation.
Your DAF Is a Perfect Fit for VCI's Mission
Your Gift Changes Two Generations at Once
When you recommend a grant to VCI from your DAF, something remarkable happens: your generosity reaches both ends of the age spectrum simultaneously.
Through our Foster Grandparent Program, Senior Companion Program, and OTTER reading initiative, senior volunteers (many in their 60s and 70s) gain renewed purpose, community, and meaning. Children in Central Florida's Head Start programs and classrooms receive the one-on-one mentorship that can reshape the trajectory of their lives.
And here's something worth reflecting on: the average DAF donor is 62 years old and volunteers their time to charity. In many ways, DAF donors share the same life stage as VCI's own senior volunteers. Your financial generosity and their hands-on service are two expressions of the same values.
of DAF donors say they give more to charity because they have a DAF, meaning your fund can extend your generosity well beyond what you might otherwise give.
Benefits of Giving Through Your DAF
-
Your Deduction Is Already Taken
You received your charitable deduction when you funded your DAF. Recommending a grant to VCI costs nothing additional. 100% of your grant goes straight to our mission.
-
No Capital Gains on Appreciated Assets
If you funded your DAF with appreciated stock or securities, you already bypassed capital gains taxes. Every dollar you donate works harder than a cash gift.
-
Easy Recurring Annual Giving
Most DAF portals let you schedule recurring grants to VCI, creating a reliable, renewable source of support for our volunteers and the families they serve.
-
Create a Perpetual Legacy
Name VCI as a successor beneficiary on your DAF account so your commitment to intergenerational service continues in perpetuity, a living expression of your values.
-
Anonymous Giving Available
DAF grants can be made anonymously. Your impact is felt even when your name stays private, though we'd love the chance to thank you personally.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will I receive a tax receipt from VCI for my DAF grant?
No, and that is intentional. You received your charitable tax deduction when you originally contributed assets to your Donor Advised Fund, not when grants are distributed to nonprofits. VCI will send a personalized acknowledgment letter confirming receipt of your grant, but it will not serve as a tax receipt or include the language typically found on charitable gift receipts.
If you have questions about your specific tax situation, please consult your financial advisor or tax professional.
Can a DAF grant fulfill a pledge I've made to VCI?
A DAF grant cannot be used to satisfy a legally binding pledge. However, if you've expressed an intention to give to VCI without entering into a legally binding commitment, a DAF grant can typically fulfill that intention. If you're planning to make a significant multi-year commitment through your DAF, we recommend speaking with our team before making any pledge. We are happy to structure the arrangement appropriately.
What if I want my grant to be anonymous?
Most DAF sponsors offer the option to make grants anonymously. If you select anonymous giving, your sponsor will not include your personal information with the payment to VCI. We will simply receive the funds and know them as an anonymous DAF grant. If you prefer anonymity through the formal grant process but would still like a personal connection with our team, you're always welcome to reach out to us directly.
How quickly will VCI receive my grant?
After you submit your grant recommendation, your DAF sponsor typically reviews and processes the payment within 5 to 15 business days. Many major sponsors offer Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT), which delivers grants directly to VCI's bank account faster and more securely than paper checks. If you want to confirm the timeline for your specific sponsor, their donor services team can give you an exact estimate.
Can I direct my grant to a specific VCI program?
Yes. Most DAF sponsors allow you to include a note or purpose designation with your grant recommendation. You may direct your gift toward the Foster Grandparent Program, the Senior Companion Program, the OTTER reading initiative, or general operating support. VCI will honor the intent of your designation. If you'd like to discuss the impact of supporting a specific program area, we'd love to talk with you. Contact Hue Jacobs or Scott Chauveaux directly.
Can I set up a recurring grant to VCI from my DAF?
Yes, and we encourage it! Most DAF portals allow you to schedule recurring annual (or other frequency) grant recommendations to VCI automatically. This is one of the most powerful features of a Donor Advised Fund. It creates a predictable, sustainable partnership with VCI without requiring you to log in each year. Recurring DAF giving is one of the most meaningful expressions of long-term commitment to our mission.
Can I name VCI as a beneficiary of my DAF account when I'm no longer here?
Absolutely. Most DAF sponsors allow you to designate one or more nonprofits as successor beneficiaries, meaning that when all account advisors are no longer able to manage the fund, the remaining balance flows to the charities you've named. Naming VCI as a successor beneficiary is a profound way to extend your generosity and your values across generations. Contact your DAF sponsor directly to update your succession plan, and please let us know, as we would be honored to recognize your legacy commitment.
Can a DAF grant pay for event tickets, gala admission, or auction items?
No. IRS regulations prohibit DAF grants from being used to purchase event tickets, gala admissions, raffle tickets, auction items, preferential seating, or any benefit worth more than a de minimis amount. Your grant must go toward VCI's charitable programs and operations. We want every DAF gift to be fully IRS-compliant and tax-advantaged, so we do not apply DAF grants to event ticket purchases or membership benefits with perks.
